Description

This volume is the second edition of the DECADES trilogy (Vol. 1 1990-2000 / Vol. 3 2010-2020), which presents 30 years of graffiti in Berlin. With a selection from thousands of photos, a picture of the development of the graffiti subculture in Berlin is created in a unique way. In addition, a multitude of personal texts by the writers provide an intimate insight into their experiences and perspectives. On the one hand, these texts present a very vivid picture of the Berlin graffiti scene, and on the other hand, they allow the reader to experience the Berlin of days gone by.

The second volume 2000-2010 contains portraits with many photos and personal texts on the following graffiti writers and crews:

CHIKA, CO2, DIKE, DROW, EHSONE, EXOT, FLS, GATE, HK, KAMEL43, KAZE, METRO, MR.IX, MRN, MINK, PACK, PAST2, RELAX, RINO, ROGER, SABE, SMASH, SKAR, SKEY, SPAIR, TFZ, TIER + P. BERG special with lyrics by MC BOMBER

The book also includes mixed chapters with hundreds of photos of many other graffiti writers and crews from the 00s.

Berlin’s graffiti in the 00s was characterized by transformation and further development. Many writers from the 90s gave up painting illegal graffiti, a few stayed and many people, especially from the eastern part of the city, moved up. After the “wild style dictate” of the 90s, the forms of letter design are now pluralizing. The repression against illegal graffiti and the professionalization of writers in dealing with it are intensifying, and the number of graffiti applied to trains is increasing enormously. Thus, a large part of the illustrations in the book deals again with the discipline of train writing.

Another major theme in DECADES 2 is the massive change in the appearance of Berlin, especially in the eastern part of the city. The brown, crumbling facades and the gaps between buildings along with the fire walls are disappearing. With them, graffiti streetpieces of an entire decade are being lost. Prenzlauer Berg is particularly affected, in no other place in Berlin, the radical transformation of the city becomes as clear as here. Berlin is getting its new hip face.

The writers portrayed in this volume talk about their personal development, their perception of the city’s transformation, and how the styles and the aesthetic evaluation of these have affected their artistic work and individual contemplation. The result is another comprehensive work with deep insights into the different characters, ways of thinking and lives of the protagonists depicted.
